초급 영어원서 읽기 여덟 번째 시간입니다.

이번 영어원서는 ‘The hare and the tortoise 토끼와 거북이’ 입니다.

워낙 유명한 이야기라 모두들 잘 알고 계시죠. 그런데 영어로 읽어 볼 기회를 많이 없으셨을 것이에요. 재미있겠죠?

영어원서 '토끼와 거북이' 원문읽기

 

 

 

잘 읽어보셨나요? 잘 아는 이야기다 보니 좀 더 이해가 쉽죠?

오래된 이야기라 세세한 이야기는 기억이 나질 않았었는데 다시 읽으니 이야기가 새롭기도 하네요.

 

대략적으로 토끼와 거북이가 경기를 했는데 토끼가 거북이를 얕잡아 봐서 중간에 낮잠을 자게 되고, 그러다 거북이한테 경주에서 지게 되었다라고 기억을 하고 있었는데, 경주를 새벽에 했었네요. 졸릴 만도 하죠^^.

어쨌든 열심히 하는 사람이 게으른 사람보다 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있다는 교훈은 변하질 않겠죠^^.

토끼와 거북이

Once upon a time ..../ there was a hare who, / boasting how he could run faster / than anyone else, was forever teasing tortoise / for its slowness.

 

Once upon a time 옛날 옛적에/ there was a hare who, 토끼 한 마리가 있었다/ boasting how he could run faster 그가 더 잘 뛴다고 자랑하는/ than anyone else, 어느 누구보다/ was forever teasing tortoise 언제나 거북이를 놀렸다/ for its slowness. 그가 느리다고/

 

옛날 옛적에 제일 잘 뛴다고 잘난 척 하는 토끼가 살았는데, 그 토끼는 거북이가 느리다고 언제나 놀렸다.

Then one day, / the irate tortoise answered back: / "Who do you think you are? / There's no denying you're swift, / but even you / can be beaten!" / The hare squealed with laughter.

Then one day, 그런데 어느 날/ the irate tortoise answered back: 짜증난 거북이가 대답했다/ "Who do you think you are?” "네가 뭐가 그리 잘났냐?" There's no denying you're swift, 네가 빠르다는 것은 부정할 수 없다/ but even you 그러나 너 조차도/ can be beaten!" 질 수 있다/ The hare squealed with laughter. 토끼는 크게 웃었다.

 

그런데 어느 날, 짜증난 거북이가 대답했다. "네가 뭐가 그리 잘났냐? 네가 빠르다는 건 알겠지만 너도 질 수 있어!” 토끼가 큰 웃음을 터트렸다.

"Beaten in a race? / By whom? / Not you, surely! / I bet / there's nobody in the world / that can win against me, / I'm so speedy. / Now, why don't you try?"

 

"Beaten in a race? 내가 진다고?/ By whom? 누구한테?/ Not you, surely! 당연히 너는 아니다!/ I bet 나는 확신한다/ there's nobody in the world 세상에 누구도 없다/ that can win against me, 나를 이길 수 있는 사람은/ I'm so speedy. 나는 아주 빠르다/ Now, why don't you try?" 이제 너도 한번 해 볼래?/

 

“내가 진다고? 누구한테? 너는 당연히 아니고, 내가 장담컨대 세상 누구도 나랑 견줄 순 없지. 난 아주 빠르잖아. 근데, 한번 해 볼 테냐?”

Annoyed by such bragging, / the tortoise accepted the challenge. / A course was planned, / and next day at dawn / they stood / at the starting line. / The hare yawned sleepily / as the meek tortoise / trudged slowly off.

Annoyed by such bragging, 이러한 허풍에 짜증나서/ the tortoise accepted the challenge. 거북이는 그 도전을 받아들였다/A course was planned, 달리는 길은 정해졌다/ and the next day at dawn 그리고 다음날 새벽에/ they stood 그들은 섰다/ at the starting line. 출발점에. 이러한 허풍에 짜증나서, 거북이는 그 도전을 받아들였다. 달리는 길은 정해졌고 다음날 새벽에 그들은 출발점에 섰다. 온순한 거북이가 느리게 터벅터벅 걸을 때 토끼가 졸린 듯 하품했다.

When the hare saw / how painfully slow / his rival was, / he decided, / half asleep / on his feet, / to have a quick nap. / "Take your time!"/ he said. / "I'll have forty winks / and catch up with you / in a minute."

When the hare saw 토끼가 봤을 때/ how painfully slow 얼마나 고통스럽게 느렸는지/ his rival was, 그의 라이벌이/ he decided, 그는 결심했다/ half asleep 반 잠들기로/ on his feet, 서서/ to have a quick nap. 짧은 낮잠을 자기 위해/"Take your time!" 시간을 가져/ he said. 그는 말했다/ "I'll have forty winks 내가 40번 깜빡이고 (짧은 낮잠을 자고)/ and catch up with you 널 따라잡겠다/ in a minute." 일 분 안에/

 

토끼가 그의 라이벌이 얼마나 고통스럽게 느렸는지 봤을 때, 그는 잠시 낮잠을 자기 위해 서서 반쯤 잠들기로 결정했다. “천천히 가라.” 토끼가 말했다. “난 잠 좀 자고서 금방 널 쫓아 갈 테니까”

The hare woke / with a start from a fitful sleep / and gazed round, / looking for the tortoise. / But the creature was / only a short distance away, / having barely covered / a third of the course.

 

The hare woke 토끼는 일어났다/ with a start from a fitful sleep 조금 잔 후에 깜짝 놀라/ and gazed round, 그리고 주위를 둘러보았다/ looking for the tortoise. 거북이를 찾아/ But the creature was 그러나 그 생물은 (거북이는) / only a short distance away, 고작 짧은 거리밖에 가지 못했다/ having barely covered 겨우 완료하면서/ a third of the course. 코스의 1/3 정도/

 

토끼가 짧은 잠을 자고 난 후 깜짝 놀라 깨서 두리번거리며 거북이를 찾아보았다. 그러나 거북은 별로 멀리 가지 못했다. 겨우 코스의 삼분지 일을 갔을까?

Breathing a sigh of relief, / the hare decided / he might as well / have breakfast too, / and off he went / to munch some cabbages / he had noticed / in a nearby field. But the heavy meal / and the hot sun / made his eyelids droop.

안도의 숨을 내쉰 토끼는 이왕에 아침도 먹자고 결정했고, 예전에 발견 했던 근처 밭에 있는 양배추를 먹으러 갔습니다. 그러나 과식과 뜨거운 태양이 그를 졸리게 했습니다.

With a careless glance / at the tortoise, / now halfway along the course, / he decided to have another snooze / before flashing / past the winning post. / And smiling / at the thought of the look on / the tortoise's face / when it saw / the hare speed by, / he fell fast asleep / and was soon snoring happily.

With a careless glance 신경 쓰지 않은 눈치로 쳐다보고/ at the tortoise, 거북이를/ now half way along the course, 지금 코스의 반을 걸은/ he decided 그는 결정했다/ to have another snooze 두 번째 낮잠을 자기로/ before flashing 번개처럼 뛰기 전에/ past the winning post. 결승선을 지나/ And smiling 그리고 미소 지으며/ at the thought of the look on 모습을 보는 생각에/ the tortoise's face 거북이의 얼굴/ when it saw 그가 봤을 때/ the hare speed by, 토끼가 지나치는 것을/ he fell fast asleep 그는 빨리 잠이 들었다/ and was soon snoring happily. 그리고 곧 행복하게 코골았다/

 

신경 쓰지 않은 눈치로 거북이를 바라보니 그는 이제야 반을 갔을 정도였다. 그래서 토끼는 번개처럼 뛰기 전에 한숨 더 자기로 했다. 그리고 (그렇게 빨리 뛰어) 거북이를 지나칠 때 거북이가 얼굴에 떠올릴 표정을 생각하며 미소 지으며 빨리 잠이 든 토끼는 코까지 행복하게 골았다.

The sun started to sink, / below the horizon, / and the tortoise, / who had been plodding / towards the winning post / since morning, / was scarcely a yard / from the finish. / At that very point, / the hare woke / with a jolt.

The sun started to sink, 해는 지기 시작했다/ below the horizon, 수평선 너머로/ and the tortoise, 그리고 거북이는/ who had been plodding 기어가고 있던/ towards the winning post 결승선을 향해/ since morning, 아침부터/ was scarcely a yard 거의 한 야드를 남기고 있었다/ from the finish. 결승선까지/ At that very point, 바로 그 순간/ the hare woke 토끼는 깨어났다/ with a jolt. 깜짝 놀라/

 

태양은 수평선 너머로 지기 시작했고 아침부터 결승선을 향해 기어가던 거북이는 이제 거의 한 야드를 남기고 있었습니다. 바로 그 순간, 토끼는 깜짝 놀라 깨었습니다.

He could see / the tortoise / a speck in the distance / and away he dashed. / He leapt and bounded / at a great rate, / his tongue lolling, / and gasping for breath. / Just a little more / and he'd be first / at the finish.

 

He could see 그는 볼 수 있었다/ the tortoise 거북이를/ a speck in the distance 먼 거리에서 점처럼 보이는/ and away he dashed. 그리고 그는 뛰었다/ He leapt and bounded 그는 폴짝거리며 뛰었다/ at a great rate, 엄청난 속도로/ his tongue lolling, 혓바닥이 늘어나고/ and gasping for breath. 숨이 찰 정도로/ Just a little more 조금만 더/ and he'd be first 그리고 그는 일등이 될 수 있었다/ at the finish. 결승선에서

 

거북이가 작은 점처럼 보이자 토끼는 정신 없이 뛰어나갔다. 토끼는 혓바닥이 늘어나고 숨이 찰 정도로 팔짝 뛰었다. 좀만 더 뛰면 토끼가 이길 수 있었다.

But the hare's last leap / was just too late, / for the tortoise had beaten him / to the winning post. / Poor hare! / Tired and in disgrace, / he slumped down / beside the tortoise / who was silently smiling at him. / "Slowly does it every time!"/ he said.

 

But the hare's last leap 그러나 토끼의 마지막 도약은/ was just too late, 너무 늦었다/ for the tortoise had beaten him 거북이가 그를 이겼기 때문이다/ to the winning post. 결승선에서/ Poor hare! 불쌍한 토끼!/ Tired and in disgrace, 피곤하고 불명예에 찌들어/ he slumped down 그는 쓰러졌다/ beside the tortoise 거북이 옆에/ who was silently smiling at him. 그 옆에서 조용히 웃고 있는/ "Slowly does it every time!" 천천히 꾸준히 하는 것이 항상 성공하는 것이다/ he said. 그가 말했다.

 

그러나 토끼의 마지막 도약은 너무 늦고, 거북이가 토끼를 결승선에서 이겼다. 불쌍한 토끼! 힘들고 불명예에 찌든 토끼는 조용히 웃는 거북이 옆에 쓰러졌다. "천천히 꾸준히 하는 게 항상 성공하는 거지." 라고 거북은 말했다.
